666AD
A downloadable game
The Devil came to Ravenna.
Not to destroy it. But to own it, dealing in bargains for everyone.
The Pope sends an envoy.
You are sinners, consciously chosen, and the reward for your testimony is: salvation.
The year is 666 after Jesus Christ.
A mystery man named Gregorios is serving a crumbling empire in the last outpost of Roman civilization in the West. The Church is fracturing: by decree of Emperor Constans, the See of Ravenna has just split from Rome after Pope Vitalian and Archbishop Maurus have mutually excommunicated each other. The old world is agonizing.
The Devil just showed up as if invited.
Will you testify … or let him take your Soul?
This is a dark narrative roleplaying game set at the dying moments of an ancient world. Players navigate Ravenna as the Devil engineers the collapse of everything around them. Part conspiracy thriller, part folk horror, part theological nightmare, a diabolical history game of temptation, sacrifice, and revelation.
You need 2–6 players, one of them is the Curator. The others are the Irregulars, a papal envoy sent to Ravenna to testify that the Devil is there, and to confront him.
You will need a few regular cubic dice and the role sheets, printed or digital.
Prologue
- Pick up 1 from the 6 Irregular roles as the Curator introduces them.
- Answer your prologue questions.
- Get a bond question from the Curator, pick a partner, and answer together.
- Choose a name.
- Describe your appearance and bearing.
- Think up a surface mission that brings you to Ravenna as an envoy.
The Bargain
- You start with 3 Soul.
You’re tempted, not quite lost, but not more zealous than the next god-fearing soul. - If you suffer distress or moral compromise, roll a die.
If the result is higher than your Soul, spend 1. If it’s lower, gain 1.
You cannot go higher than 5. - To recover Soul, answer your self-check questions in downtime.
If most of them get a yes, gain 1 Soul. You still cannot go higher than 5. - When you face risk, the Curator tells what the cost is. Say what you do and roll 1 die.
Or if you have a relevant asset, roll 2 dice and pick the lowest.
If you’re hindered or restrained by circumstance, roll 2 and pick the highest. Spend 1 Soul to remove this disadvantage. - If the result is 1, you get a clean success without cost.
2–3 mean limited success with some cost, immediate or delayed.
4–6 mean forfeit with the full cost in effect. The Devil offers to repair it. If you accept it, spend 1 Soul. The gift is spectacular. If you reject the offer, gain 1 Soul, and the forfeit will become a torment. - If your Soul drops to 0, you’re damned but you have a little more to hold on to.
Your Lost Soul starts from 5. The Devil starts to influence you. You can try to resist, but if you roll higher than your current Lost Soul, you fail.
Regardless of the result, spend 1 Lost Soul.
Your Lost Soul is tested as usual by distress and dilemma.
Prepare your testimony when you reach 0 again. First describe how you depart this world, and then you are judged by the table.
