Arts Work Differently
During the playtests we've experienced a lot of "meh" with how the original set of "Arts" worked. They were not arts per se, but skills, just called arts. They created a lot of optimizing and specializing issues around the Face the Music move. Now, this move is a quintessential element of my design. It should be a conscious choice, not "let's roll and see." There are tons of posts about this problem, but where I'm at is: if you do it, there will be some cost either way. Check out the new version and decide if you agree.
The connected idea, or rather the spark where the whole change started from, is: scrap the "arts" and replace them with actual arts. And the current thing is converted to Path Talents. Yeah, just like that. Now each Path have one default Talent that helps in mundane conflicts. What's happening here is that default actions like combat or lockpicking get awarded to individual Paths, and the others have to Face the Music for the same thing. Yes. This is not your average fantasy adventure game. This is about vaudeville orcs, not raiders.
Okay, so back to the Arts. Orc-Astra needs to be focused on Stage Acts or Circus-like Shows as much as possible. So if the orcs are artists, they should excel in things like fire eating or illusion tricks or poetry. And, when you Face the Music, you can use your Arts for advantage. On the other hand, when you Put on a Show, your total list of Arts influence what you can do. You don't get bonuses here, the Arts are part of the show. And when you play other moves, your Arts contribute, but not as extras: they define the flavor, and you should try to narrate your moves considering what Arts you're good at.
That's it. As a result, all files are updated. Enjoy.
